                                            Autumn 2009

Bonnie Charlie and Brief Encounter were sold by Thurloe Thoroughbreds at Tattersalls Horses In Training Sale for great returns of 105,000 gns and 140,000 gns respectively. Both were purchased as yearlings within 24 hours of each other at Doncaster St Leger Sale 2007 - Bonnie Charlie, who incidentally earned £120,000 in prize-money, cost 46,000 gns and Brief Encounter, total prize-money £50,000, for 32,000 gns.

The main yearling sales are now behind us and the agency achieved an exceptional pinhook with a 16,000 gns foal purchase by Medicean realising an unbelievable 220,000 gns to Shadwell Estates. Our delighted clients were the staff of Juddmonte Farms and this was their second big result pinhooking, as 10 years ago, we purchased a 15,000 gns colt foal by King's Theatre for them - he was resold as a yearling for 200,000 gns.

Our foal pinhook syndicate, in association with Kirtlington Stud, yielded as satisfactory return in this market with 3 colts achieving a return of 116,000 gns for an initial outlay of 65,000 gns.

On the racecourse, Brief Encounter and Bonnie Charlie have run consistently well without winning, improving their BHA ratings to 100 and 104 respectively.

Royal Intruder continues to thrive - winning three more races this year, two at Sandown and one at Salisbury.

While their Dorback has thus far failed to live up to the lofty expectations held by his trainer, Thurloe Thoroughbreds have a very promising two year old filly in Golden Aria, whom we purchased in this year's St Cloud Breeze-Up Sale for €30,000. She won nicely at Newmarket from Henry Cecil's highly regarded Timepiece (who won her next start), in a race that Cecil introduced subsequent Gr.1 winners in Light Shift and Midday.

                                           Summer 2009

After a slightly disappointing run in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot, Brief Encounter won a Class 2 Handicap during Newmarket's July meeting. His total prize money is now just short of £50,000 and his rating is up to 96.

Another Class 2 winner recently was Brassini, winning at Sandown for his fifth career victory. Tragically, Brassini was fatally injured in his next start when challenging for the lead at the furlong pole at Chester. In addition to his 5 wins, he was placed 12 times (from 26 starts), earning nearly £50,000 for his enthusiastic owners The Links Partnership.

Two of of the 2008 yearling purchases have now run. Dorback won nicely on his debut at Windsor for Thurloe Thoroughbreds and Henry Candy. He is being aimed at the DBS Sales race at York in August.

Lean Machine finished an honourable second on his debut at Newmarket to subsequent GR.2 winner Silver Grecian. Expected to win his next start, he got stuck in the mud at Salisbury again finishing as runner up. He will now have a few weeks off to give him time to strengthen.

Spring 2009

Presvis - a 15,000 gns foal purchase - has proved himself to be one of the top turf horses in the world.

Since the turn of the year, he has won 3 races including The Audemars Piguet QE II Cup (Gr.1) at Sha Tin and was runner up in Gr.1 races in Dubai and Singapore - his only other starts. His prize money haul in 2009 is £1.82 million. There will be more to come from him later in the year.

Brief Encounter
won a valuable Class 2 handicap at York for Thurloe Thoroughbreds and now heads to Royal Ascot for the Britannia Stakes.

Global  is improving rapidly, winning 2 races within a week - most recently by 6 lengths carrying top weight including a 6lb penalty.

Autumn 2008

At Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1, we offered our first two
foal pinhooks from last year through Kirtlington Stud. They both
achieved a good profit for their respective syndicates. A nice colt by Kyllachy, which we purchased for 60,000 gns, was sold for 120,000 gns and an imposing colt by High Chaparral, a 30,000 gns purchase, did even better when realising 105,000 gns.

Bonnie Charlie continues to run consistently at a high level. After
being runner up in the valuable DBS St.Leger Sales race, he won a Class
2 conditions race at Doncaster. He was then 3rd, beaten less than a
length, in the Prix Eclipse Gr.3 at Chantilly. His BHA rating is 109 and
his earnings are just shy of £100,000.

Brief Encounter duly won his maiden in good style by over 3 lengths, earning a BHA rating of 81. He has now been put away for the year.

Both these two year olds, who were bought as yearlings DBS for Thurloe
Thoroughbreds, have yet to finish out of the frame in 8 starts between them.

Appraisal, who has always been held in high regard, confirmed this by
easily winning a maiden at Goodwood, before running very creditably
in the Tattersalls October Sales race - over a trip too short and ground
too fast for him.

Summer 2008

Bonnie Charlie made a belated return to the track at Glorious Goodwood and was beaten a head into 2nd place in the Gr.3 Molecomb S. Having not raced since mid April, due to some remodelling of his knees, this was a very exciting comeback and he is currently joint 6th rated two year old on 108. He may well run at York in the DBS £300,000 St. Leger Yearling Stakes.

Our other Doncaster purchase for Thurloe Thoroughbreds, Brief Encounter, made a very satisfactory debut finishing 3rd at Sandown.

Brassini has gone from strength to strength, winning 3 times and placing 3 times, culminating in a gutsy win at Sandown in a Class 3 Handicap under 9st 02lbs. He has now won over £30,000 for his enthusiastic owners and his BHA rating has risen from 77 to 90 this year.

Another progressive horse, also trained by Rod Millman, is Carlitos Spirit. Now a winner of 3 races in 2008, he has gone up 12 lbs in the handicap.

Mizooka has been very consistent and is unlucky to have only won one race, after placing on each of her four previous starts this year.

Royal Intruder has run consistently well in good handicaps and remains one to watch - but he does need an easy surface.

APRIL 2008

Our first two year old runner of the year, Bonnie Charlie, made a winning debut at Windsor. From a poor draw, he was always travelling well under Richard Hughes and won cosily by 2 lengths. He should certainly win again.

As suggested in our news for March, Dream Day did indeed start her campaign in The Dubai Duty Free (Gr.3) at Newbury and ran a fine race, coming second to one of the favourites for The Stan James 1000 Guineas. She looked burly and hairy in the paddock and we expect quite some improvement. No decision has been made in respect of her participation in The 1000 Guineas itself, but she does look an exciting prospect.

MARCH 2008

With the seemingly interminable winter months nearly at an end, flat racing proper on turf is only a week or two away – headed by the Craven and Greenham meetings.

The Sales’ season last autumn went pretty well for us, buying some nice yearlings and selling our pinhooks satisfactorily despite the sharp market downturn.

Here are a few horses, either purchased or managed, that we are particularly looking forward to seeing in action during the year ahead:

Older Horses :

Selinka has done well through the winter at Fair Winter Farm. A typical Selkirk, she has really matured from 3 to 4. A Listed winner at 2 and at 3, she is usually slow to come to herself and may not start her campaign in the Gr.3 at Epsom on Oaks day.

El Bosque is another tall leggy type, who did us proud last year. The handicapper rather got hold of him (103) after a facile win in an ordinary race on heavy ground, but he is down to 95 which should give him a chance.

Three Year Olds :

Dream Day did little wrong last year, winning on debut, half a length 2nd on her second start and then beaten just over a length when 6th in a falsely run Gr.3. She may off well start in the Dubai Duty Free Gr.3 at Newbury.

Pure Song is another Robert Barnett homebred (a daughter of his classic winner Pure Grain), who is unraced due to a split pastern last year. John Dunlop has always been very sweet on the filly and she is working well.

Royal Intruder, Night Premiere, Mizooka, Silky Steps and Operachy should all do well as three year olds.

Two Year Olds:

Appraisal  (R.Hannon), bought for The Waney Racing Group, is a lovely colt by Mark Of Esteem, who sired their best horse to date in Redback. Although he is from the family of Two Clubs and Red Clubs, he may take a little time.

Rio Del Oro (R.Hannon) is another Waney colt. A much sharper type, this colt is by Touch Gold from an American dirt family. He is doing all that is asked of him and looks precocious.

Polemica (E.Dunlop) is a daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar with a lot of pedigree, bought for Thurloe Thoroughbreds. She has a bit of attitude and looks reasonably sharp.

Penzena  (W.Knight) was a successful pinhook by Tobougg, closely related to Salamanca, who did so well for us. This was a gorgeous foal and did everything right until her sale as a yearling.

Other purchases who ought to be show ability at 2 years are :

Brief Encounter (A. Balding)
Bonnie Charlie
(R. Hannon)
Global
(R. Hannon)
Strevelyn
(Mrs A. Duffield)
Barnezet
(R. Hannon)

AUGUST 2007

MIZOOKA, a 35,000 gns purchase for the MST Partnership, who are shareholders in the mighty EL BOSQUE, records her first victory in a 7 furlong Salisbury nursery. A thoroughly pleasing performance by the Ralph Beckett trained filly, who stayed on gamely to win a shade cosily going away in the final hundred yards. She can win again this year, probably stepping up to one mile.

JULY 2007

ROYAL INTRUDER, bought as a yearling for the ever more successful Thurloe Thoroughbreds, made virtually all in a 5f maiden at Sandown and won going away by one and three quarter lengths. He has a lot of natural speed and should win again.

BRASSINI wins a Novice Stakes over 5 furlongs and will take his chance in Newbury’s Weatherbys Supersprint at Newbury on 21st July.

EL BOSQUE slammed his rivals in a 6f Class 2 by 7 lengths under 9st 7lbs. Winning off a rating of 94, his official mark has been raised to 102. His earnings for his enthusiastic owners are approaching £40,000.

SELINKA reversed Royal Ascot placings with a cosy victory in The Distaff Stakes (Listed) on Eclipse day at Sandown. She will now take in Group races in an attempt to add to her already considerable value

JUNE 2007

SELINKA ran a fine race when 2nd in The Listed Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot.

BRASSINI a 16,000 gns purchase for Rod Millman won his maiden at Chester after placing on all three of his previous starts. He looks to be improving with racing.

KERRIEMUIR LASS made all to win a 0-85 under 9st 5lbs at Windsor. She was bought as a yearling for Thurloe Thoroughbreds and, now a dual winner, she has become a valuable filly. She is out of a full sister to an Epsom Oaks winner and is herself a half sister to this year’s Oaks d’Italia winner Fashion Statement.

BESPOKE BOY ran 2nd in the Listed Woodcote Stakes at Epsom on Derby Day.

MAY 2007

EL BOSQUE wins a Class 3 Handicap over 7f at Lingfield, maintaining his consistency.

BESPOKE BOY, a profitable foal purchase in 2005, made all to score decisively on his debut at Ripon.

RASAMAN followed up in his second seasonal start, again winning over 6f at Lingfield, his first start in handicap company.

APRIL 2007

RASAMAN, bought as a yearling for Thurloe Thoroughbreds, won his first start at 3 years in a 6f maiden at Lingfield

DECEMBER 2006

The Thoroughbred Breeders' Association Awards for 2006 were announced and they are indicative of the agency's success and versatility. Leading British-Based First Season Stallion KYLLACHY, was bought by us as a yearling for 36,000 gns. The Small Breeder Award (Flat) was won by Harry Ormesher of The Old Suffolk Stud for breeding Epsom Derby winner SIR PERCY. We purchased the dam PERCY'S LASS for 28,000 gns on Harry's behalf, prior to buying Sir Percy himself as a foal. Both British National Hunt Stallion awards were won by ALFLORA, who was bought by us as a stallion for Shade Oak Stud.

NOVEMBER 2006

The agency has been retained to promote and manage First Season Stallion STRIKING AMBITION, who retires to Longdon Stud in Staffordshire. The property of Peter Webb, who is supporting the horse with at least a dozen mares, this very good looking consistent sprinter is being well received by breeders, standing at £3,000.

OCTOBER 2006

The following week (see Sept 2006), the second foal of Lady Links, a yearling filly by Cape Cross, was sold at Tattersalls October Sale Part 1 for 240,000 gns.

Later in the same sale, a bay daughter of Sadler's Wells and Time Away,  the property of W & R Barnett Ltd and partner, became the highest priced filly sold in the UK in 2006 realizing 1.2 million gns.

Both yearlings were prepared for sale at Fair Winter Farm.

The Agency's Pinhooking has yielded a good return. The foals which were purchased in 2005 for a total of 152,000 gns have all made a profit and have been sold as yearlings collectively for 303,000 - virtually twice their outlay.

These include a colt by Lemon Drop Kid (42,000 gns foal realizing 110,000 gns as a yearling) and a colt by Desert Style (10,000 gns to 35,000 gns).

                                          SEPTEMBER 2006

SELINKA wins The Finnforest Oh So Sharp Stakes, Listed, at Newmarket owned and bred by Robert Barnett. Managed by Will Edmeades Bloodstock, Selinka is the first foal of the dual Listed winner Lady Links, purchased in 2002 by ourselves for W & R Barnett Ltd for 105,000 gns.

AUGUST 2006

NORISAN is stakes placed twice more taking his official racing to 100.

DUROVA, bought for 20,000 gns at the 2006 Doncaster Breeze-Up Sale finally gets off the mark after placing in her 5 previous starts.

IL PALIO, the five grand flyer, wins his 4th two year old race of the season.

EL BOSQUE duly wins again back at 6 furlongs.

JULY 2006

NORISAN duly followed up his Newmarket win with victory in a Novice race at Lingfield, before running a creditable 3rd in a Listed race at Ascot on King George Day.

IL PALIO, bought for only 5,000 gns as a yearling, won his third two year old race of the season for Rod Millman.

EL BOSQUE, 23,000 gns yearling, won a 6f maiden at Haydock on his second start for Rod Millman, before running 4th in The Weatherbys Super Sprint under 8st 11lbs. Back over 6f, he will win again.

JUNE 2006

TIME ON won the Prix de Malleret Gr.2 at Saint-Cloud easing down by one and a half lengths, further enhancing the quality of W & R Barnett's broodmare band at Fair Winter Farm.

NORISAN, bought as a yearling for The Waney Racing Group, dead-heated in a Newmarket Maiden on his second start and is expected to progress.

SIR PERCY wins The Vodafone Derby at Epsom. His dam PERCY’S LASS was purchased by us for 28,000 gns on behalf of the breeder Harry Ormesher of The Old Suffolk Stud.

SIR PERCY himself was a 20,000 gns Foal purchased by us on behalf of the Kirtlington Stud Foal Syndicate.

MAY 2006

TIME ON, the property of Robert Barnett, runs away with The Weatherbys Bank Cheshire Oaks (Listed). Will Edmeades acts as Stud and Racing manager to Mr Barnett’s company W & R Barnett Ltd.
